FMC Launches Vessel Capacity Investigation

The Federal Maritime Commission is starting an investigation of tight vessel capacity that ocean importers and exporters say is hindering their ability to compete in global markets, the commission announced Wednesday.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials recently announced that beginning January 26, 2010, they will take a "graduated escalated enforcement" approach to the full enforcement of the 10+2 interim final rule that amended 19 CFR to require Security Filing information from importers and additional information from carriers for vessel (maritime) cargo before it is brought into the U.S.

Pacific Carriers Call for ‘Emergency’ Rate Hike.
Shipping lines in the eastbound Pacific will attempt to increase their freight rates by $400 per 40-foot container on Jan. 15 as an interim step toward a larger rate increase to take effect when carriers and their customers negotiate their 2010-11 service contracts next spring.
